New Roots Farm is an 8.6-acre urban farm operated by the International Rescue Committee with just over ½-acre currently in production where refugee and immigrant families from around the world grow food for home and market. Families grow farm stand favorites but also a wide variety of staple crops they treasure from around the globe including long beans, bitter melon, isogoh, bottle gourd, roselle, water spinach, dent corn and more. More than 70 varieties of vegetables and flowers are grown using non-certified organic practices. Friends of the farm also keep bees and goats on site to assist with pollination and weed control. Regular volunteer workdays take place every Tuesday from 5:30-7:00 pm, May through October, email for details.
